Become a Volunteer Today! 

Our volunteers come from all walks of life. They are a blend of people who share a common purpose – helping others by giving of themselves.

Who can volunteer?

Hospital volunteering is different from other nonprofit agencies in that applicants must adhere to certain requirements. If accepted in a volunteer program, you will be asked to complete the following:

  • Application - View Application Process
  • Reference checks
  • Background check
  • Interview
  • Hospital orientation
  • Commit to a minimum of 75 hours per year
  • TB test
  • Dress code

Training is an integral part of the volunteer experience. In addition to a general orientation to familiarize oneself with the responsibilities and benefits of South Georgia Medical Center, you will receive on the job training until you are competent to perform the required duties.

There are several volunteer groups to choose from.

Auxiliary

You must be at least 18 years of age to qualify. Volunteers are asked to volunteer a minimum of one, four-hour shift each week. The mission of the Auxiliary shall be to enhance service to customers of the Center. According to hospital needs and your interest, your involvement can truly make a difference in one of these areas. Summer Youth Volunteers

Young people between 14-17 years of age may participate in the South Georgia Medical Center Auxiliary’s volunteer youth program. It is designed for responsible, mature teens, who seek the opportunity to help others and who want to explore a health career. The program runs June-August each year. Youth volunteers work two days a week, six hours each day after they attend a six hour hospital orientation in early June.  Placements are in departments that request youth volunteers for the summer.

Art & Soul

Art and Soul logoThe mission of Art & Soul is to support healing by relieving stress and promoting a sense of well-being in those who are ill. Volunteers are trained to assist cancer patients with a variety of art projects. If you have an art interest and are interested in volunteering a few hours a week or a month, you will experience the rewards of this volunteer opportunity.  Application

Pet Therapy

This volunteer program provides inpatients with a visit with a supervised, trained, and screened animal to promote socialization, enhance activity, laughter, play and touch with a dog.  All animals are screened and meet Pet Therapy qualifications. Pet Therapy volunteers select the days each month to visit patients in several areas of the hospital. Application

Mended Hearts Visiting Volunteers

Mended Hearts LogoWhat is “Mended Hearts”? It is a volunteer organization of people who have heart disease, their spouses, family members, medical professional and other interested individuals. Mended Hearts Visiting Volunteers visit patients in the afternoons in the hospital to offer heart disease informational packets, tell patients and families about Mended hearts, and offer a word of encouragement. If you or someone close to you has had heart disease and have a few hours a month, you may want to be a visiting volunteer for Mended Hearts. Application 

 

Greenleaf

Golf Cart Drivers

Volunteers are needed to drive the Courtesy Carts to give Cancer Center patients the lift they need from the parking lot to the Pearlman Cancer Center entrance. If you are active and retired, then this is the ideal way for you to remain active and help your community. Volunteers will be asked to work one day each week during one of the following shifts: 8:00 am until Noon or Noon until 4:00 pm. This position requires a valid drivers license and a love for the outdoors.

Emergency Department

Volunteers assist the ED staff in the role of a Customer Representative. Duties will include comforting people, showing compassion, offering blankets and drinks to patients and family members, providing updates on wait times and other appropriate information, and other small acts of kindness to people in their time of need. Your volunteer role can make a difference to the patient and family during their visit the Emergency Department.

Chemo Cap Brigade

These community volunteers want to make a difference in the lives of cancer patients at the hospital’s Pearlman Cancer Center. Here is a way to put your sewing talents to work for others. Knit, crochet, or sew a chemo hat and donate for a cancer patient. Hats may be taken to Volunteer Services on the 4th floor of the hospital. These hats will be taken to the Cancer Center’s Infusion Room for patients to choose one and take home. Many thanks!

Smith Northview Hospital

Volunteers are needed to assist staff and patients.  They work on the Smith Northview campus of SGMC in the Outpatient Center and on the nursing units. Volunteers also drive the Courtesy Cart.  These volunteers are members of the South Georgia Medical Center Auxiliary. Application
