Cardiac Rehabilitation

Cardiac rehab is a program designed to promote and improve the fitness, health, energy levels and sense of well being in people with various forms of cardiovascular disease. Our program includes both inpatient and outpatient care encouraging lifestyle modifications that will help reduce the risk of recurrent cardiac problems. Persons often helped by a program of medically supervised exercise are individuals who have had chronic chest pain, atherosclerotic heart disease, heart attack, bypass surgery or angioplasty.

Cardiac Rehabilitation begins as inpatient education, this is considered Phase 1.  Once discharged, patients may be referred by their physician to the second phase of Cardiac Rehabilitation. This can last from 10 – 18 weeks depending on a patient’s insurance coverage options.

What will I do at Cardiac Rehabilitation?

  • Specially trained Cardiac Rehab nurses will review your medical history
  • Participants typically attend one-hour sessions two to three days a week in which they exercise on different equipment, such as treadmills, elliptical trainers, wall pulleys and stationary cycles.
  • Staff members are present to observe the exercise, counsel the participants and measure blood pressure and pulse and evaluate cardiac rhythm.

What may I expect from the program?

The goal of cardiac rehab is to improve your exercise tolerance, energy and sense of well being. You should expect to feel better both mentally and physically. During the program you will have the opportunity to attend educational programs about heart health and risk factor modification including:

  • Heart Facts
  • Smoking Cessation
  • Diet Education
  • Diabetes
  • Stress Management
  • Cholesterol
  • Benefit of Exercise

Your doctor will receive detailed reports and information to assist him/her in adjusting medications and optimizing your care. Your physician’s suggestions will be actively sought. The team approach works best at the Cardiac Rehabilitation Center.
