SGMC Seeks Input for Community Health Needs Assessment in Berrien County

Posted on: August 10th, 2023

South Georgia Medical Center is partnering with the Valdosta State University Center for South Georgia Regional Impact to conduct its Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) for the SGMC Berrien Campus.

Berrien County residents are encouraged to complete an online survey regarding the health needs and preferences of the community. These results will be used by SGMC to guide health programs and initiatives provided to the area. Residents can complete the survey by visiting sgmc.org/chnasurvey.

According to Berrien Campus Administrator Kevin Moore, this year’s survey is especially important due to the significant investment of the organization to enhance the campus and facilities available to Berrien County residents. SGMC recently began construction on a new two-story emergency room addition that will expand the current campus footprint by 26,000 square feet. The $15 million project will replace the original four-room emergency department with a new, modern nine-room emergency department.

The state-of-the-art facility will feature larger trauma and specialty care patient rooms and enhanced clinical and support space. Additionally, the expansion includes a new lobby and entrance to other hospital services. Construction is expected to be completed in the Fall of 2024.

Moore shared, “This is a great opportunity for our community members to help shape the future of healthcare services available to Berrien County.” As an additional incentive to participate, respondents will have a chance to win a $250 VISA gift card upon completing the survey.

The latest economic impact calculations for the fiscal year 2021 showed that SGMC Berrien Hospital had an annual economic impact of $22 million, generating $11.5 million in household earnings and supporting 275 jobs.

In addition to emergency services, SGMC’s Berrien Campus provides medical care for inpatient and outpatient services, imaging including 3-D mammography, a 12-bed geriatric psychiatric unit, and a substance abuse center.

The CHNA is a federal requirement for all not-for-profit hospitals under the Affordable Care Act. For more information, visit sgmc.org.
