Prostate Cancer Screening

September 17, 2019 @ 5:30 pm 7:00 pm

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and South Georgia Medical Center will host a free prostate cancer screening for eligible men at the Pearlman Cancer Center.

1 in 9 men will get prostate cancer

The screening tests for men who meet the American Cancer Society screening guidelines, will include a prostate specific antigen (PSA) lab test and a prostate exam provided by SGMC Affiliated Urologists Dr. Mike Chiang, Dr. Patrick Parker, and Dr. Jack Sosnowski and Brad Ridge PA-C.

Pre-registration is required by calling 229-433-4022.

When you call, you will be asked a couple of screening questions to determine eligibility for this free program.  If you are eligible, an appointment time will be given for the screening.  This screening is not appropriate for men who are under a urologist’s care, those who have been treated for any type of prostate issue or experience bleeding or painful urination when voiding.

According to the American Cancer Society, one in nine men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in his lifetime.  Screening tests help to find cancer in people before they have noticeable symptoms. Results of the lab tests will be mailed to participants several weeks following the screening.

GUIDELINES FOR ELIGIBILITY:

  • Must NOT have had a prostate screening in the last 2 years
  • Must NOT have had a PSA by a physician or urologist in the past year
  • Must NOT have a personal history of prostate cancer
  • Must NOT have a urologist
  • Must NOT have any of the following symptoms: blood in urine, difficulty stopping/starting urination, pain or burning on urination, pain in legs, pelvis, back (if you have any of these symptoms, you need to make an appointment with a urologist or physician).

All participants will be entered into a drawing to win a 55″ Smart TV. Winner will be announced Friday, Sept. 20, 2019.

Pre-registration is required by calling 229-433-4022.

Screening tests do not really diagnose a disease. They tell you if you are at higher risk and need further testing to determine if you have the condition. Medical follow up with your health care practitioner is strongly recommended for any abnormal result. Some or all of the health care professionals performing screening tests at the Prostate Cancer Screening are independent contractors and are not agents or employees of the Hospital Authority of Valdosta and Lowndes County, Georgia d/b/a South Georgia Medical Center (“SGMC”). Independent contractors are responsible for their own actions, and SGMC shall not be liable for the acts or omissions of any such independent contractors.
