Residency: SGMC Health

Dr. Martin was born in rural central Florida, where limited access to healthcare shaped an early understanding of medical disparities. Growing up in a county with only a single hospital, he and his siblings received pediatric vaccinations through the local health department and relied on chiropractor offices for sports physicals due to a shortage of physicians in the area.

He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of Florida before attending the Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine for medical school. Dr. Martin chose to specialize in internal medicine because of its broad scope and versatility, with a long-term goal of opening a clinic in a rural community alongside his wife, helping address the lack of access to specialty care in underserved areas.

Valdosta’s geographic position, situated between major medical centers in Jacksonville, Gainesville, Atlanta, and Tallahassee, places SGMC Health in a unique position to serve as a healthcare hub for southern Georgia. The hospital sees a wide range of pathologies not commonly encountered in other non-tertiary care center programs. Its network of local specialists is extensive yet close-knit, offering both professional collaboration and personalized connection.

When searching for a residency program, Dr. Martin prioritized finding a hospital that serves a diverse patient population and addresses a critical regional healthcare need. SGMC Health stood out not only for its mission and clinical exposure, but also for practical benefits such as provided meals and parking, amenities that contribute to a more efficient and balanced daily routine.
