Cardiac electrophysiology is a specialized branch of cardiology focused on diagnosing and treating disorders of the heart’s electrical system. This system controls the rhythm and rate of your heartbeat, coordinating the upper and lower chambers to ensure efficient circulation. When it malfunctions, arrhythmias can occur—causing the heart to beat too fast, too slow, or irregularly. Electrophysiologists (EPs) manage these conditions through advanced diagnostics, medication, cardiac ablation, and implantable devices like pacemakers and defibrillators, often working within a multidisciplinary team to tailor treatment to each patient’s needs. Our board-certified and fellowship-trained electrophysiologists are experts in identifying and managing these issues using advanced diagnostic tools and minimally invasive procedures, all delivered with precision and care.
Advanced Treatment Options
SGMC Health houses a state-of-the-art Electrophysiology (EP) Lab at its main campus, featuring the cutting-edge Philips Azurion technology. This advanced platform enhances the precision and efficiency of cardiac procedures, offering improved safety through reduced radiation exposure, shorter procedure times, and faster recoveries.
The EP Lab offers groundbreaking treatments for arrhythmias and other serious heart rhythm disorders, including:
- Concomitant Dual Procedure Innovation: SGMC Health offers the WATCHMAN Implant—a one-time, minimally invasive procedure for patients with AFib not caused by a heart valve problem who need an alternative to long-term blood thinners. In a pioneering move, SGMC Health is also among the first in Georgia to combine the WATCHMAN Implant with AFib ablation in a single procedure. This dual approach streamlines care, reduces the need for multiple procedures, and enhances recovery times for eligible patients.
- Farapulse™ Pulsed Field Ablation (PFA): A non-thermal treatment for AFib that uses short bursts of electrical pulses to create lesions in the heart tissue, effectively stopping the abnormal electrical signals that cause AFib. It’s designed to be more targeted than traditional thermal ablation, potentially reducing the risk of damage to surrounding healthy tissue.
With these advancements, SGMC Health continues to lead the region in delivering cutting-edge, patient-centered cardiac care.
