Valdosta, GA- South Georgia Medical Center is offering free clinical breast cancer screenings during October, which is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Two separate screenings will be held, the first on Oct. 9 at SGMC’s Pearlman Cancer Center and the second on Oct. 23 at SGMC’s Health Care South Clinic. Both screenings will be held from 5-7pm.

Registration must be completed by calling 229.433.1074. According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the second most common cancer. About 1 in 8 women in the US will develop invasive breast cancer during their lifetime. It is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, exceeded only by lung cancer. Death rates from breast cancer have been declining since 1989, with larger decreases in women younger than 50. These decreases are believed to be the result of earlier detection through screening and increased awareness, as well as improved treatment.

For more information on the screenings, which can be life-saving, please call 229.433.1074.
