SGMC Health Receives National Recognition for Stroke Treatment

Posted on: August 13th, 2025
Members of SGMC Health’s Stroke Program celebrate achieving the American Heart Association Get With The Guidelines award for excellence in stroke treatment for the twelfth consecutive year.

SGMC Health has once again been recognized by the American Heart Association with the Get With The Guidelines® – Stroke Gold Plus with Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll award, marking twelve straight years of excellence in stroke treatment. As the region’s only accredited primary stroke center, SGMC Health continues to set the standard for high-quality, lifesaving care.

The Target: Type 2 Diabetes™ Honor Roll distinction highlights SGMC Health’s commitment to providing the most current, evidence-based treatment to stroke patients with Type 2 diabetes, who face a greater risk for complications. By consistently following the latest research-driven protocols, SGMC Health helps save more lives, reduce recovery times, and lower the risk of hospital readmission.

Stroke remains the No. 5 cause of death and a leading cause of long-term disability in the United States. It occurs when a blood vessel to the brain is blocked or bursts, cutting off the brain’s supply of oxygen and nutrients. Quick recognition and treatment are critical to improving survival and recovery outcomes.

“Receiving this recognition year after year is a testament to the dedication and skill of our entire stroke care team,” said William Pellow, SGMC Health Stroke Coordinator. “Our mission extends beyond treating strokes, we want our community to know the warning signs so they can act quickly. Every second counts, and early action can save a life.”

The acronym B.E.F.A.S.T. is a simple way to remember stroke symptoms:

  • Balance problems
  • Eyesight changes
  • Facial drooping
  • Arm weakness
  • Speech difficulty
  • Time to call 911

Get With The Guidelines® is a quality improvement program developed by the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association to help hospitals nationwide provide care that aligns with the most up-to-date evidence and research.
