SGMC Health recognized Michael “Mike” Edwards, RN, charge nurse in the Emergency Department at SGMC Health Smith Northview, as the February recipient of the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. Edwards was nominated by several coworkers who shared stories highlighting his consistent leadership, clinical expertise, and unwavering commitment to both patients and colleagues.
According to the nominations, Edwards is known throughout the department as a steady and calming presence, particularly during high-pressure situations. Coworkers describe him as someone who combines exceptional clinical knowledge with patience and kindness—whether placing challenging IVs, helping stabilize critically ill patients, or guiding newer team members through unfamiliar procedures. His ability to lead with confidence and humility has made him a trusted resource across the emergency department.
As a charge nurse, Edwards leads by example, often taking initiative behind the scenes to support patient flow and team efficiency. Colleagues shared that he routinely prepares transfer packets, coordinates transportation, and supports throughput—often anticipating needs before they arise.
In addition to his clinical leadership, Edwards is widely recognized as a teacher and mentor. Many of his coworkers credit him with helping build their confidence and fostering an environment where learning feels safe and supported. His approachability, encouragement, and positivity set the tone for the department and reinforce a culture of teamwork.
“Mike never seeks recognition,” his coworkers shared. “But he more than deserves it.”
The DAISY Award is presented monthly in front of the nurse’s colleagues, physicians, patients, and visitors. Each honoree receives a certificate of recognition, a hand-carved sculpture titled A Healer’s Touch from the Shona Tribe in Zimbabwe, and a floral arrangement of daisies, generously donated by The Flower Gallery, SGMC Health’s local DAISY Award sponsor.
