Jim Foster, MD, is a board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon who brings more than 20 years of experience caring for patients with complex heart and lung conditions. He specializes in advanced surgical treatment of diseases affecting the chest, including the heart and lungs, helping patients achieve meaningful improvements in both quality of life and long-term health outcomes.
Dr. Foster is known for his open, approachable style and his commitment to building strong relationships with patients through clear communication, trust, and understanding. He is passionate about using surgical intervention to make a lasting difference in his patients’ lives and values ensuring they feel informed and supported throughout their care journey.
Prior to joining SGMC Health, Dr. Foster spent two decades practicing cardiothoracic surgery at Atrium Health Navicent in Macon, where he developed a highly respected career. He earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia and completed his general surgery residency at Mercer University’s Medical Center of Central Georgia. He went on to complete a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. Foster is board-certified in thoracic and cardiac surgery by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Foster enjoys hunting, fishing, and car racing. He has been married to his wife, Kelly, for 28 years, and they have two children.
