SGMC Health’s Pearlman Cancer Center is now offering Jelmyto®, a new chemotherapy treatment for a rare type of kidney cancer called renal pelvis cancer. This innovative treatment provides patients with a kidney-sparing option that previously required referral outside the region or surgical removal of the kidney.
Jelmyto is FDA-approved for the treatment of adults with low-grade upper tract urothelial cancer, a rare cancer that develops in the lining of the upper urinary tract, including the renal pelvis—the central portion of the kidney where urine collects. Unlike traditional systemic chemotherapy, Jelmyto is delivered directly to the affected area, allowing for targeted treatment while preserving kidney function. In certain cases, it can also be used for patients who are not good candidates for surgery, and it may be repeated if needed based on how the cancer responds.
“This treatment allows us to care for patients who previously had very limited options,” said Nicole Centers, Administrative Director of the Pearlman Cancer Center. “Bringing Jelmyto to our community was a true team effort, and it allows our patients to receive specialized care locally while avoiding more invasive treatment whenever possible.”
