SGMC Health proudly recognized Kevin Broome, RN; Daryn Snipes, RN; and Moesha Hollis, RN as the latest recipients of the prestigious Safe Care Award, honoring their outstanding dedication to patient safety and rapid clinical response.

While responding to a post-operative patient’s IV alarm, Broome spoke with the patient’s wife and quickly sensed something was wrong. She shared that her husband hadn’t spoken for a little while, which immediately raised concern. Broome began assessing the patient and called for assistance. Snipes and Hollis quickly joined him, and together they recognized signs of a possible stroke. Vascular surgeon Colby Ruiz, MD, who had performed the patient’s surgery, responded right away and completed a bedside exam that revealed a serious complication related to the patient’s condition. Thanks to the team’s swift and coordinated response, the patient was rushed to surgery, where the issue was successfully treated.

“The timely assessment, collaboration, and decisive action displayed by these nurses directly saved this patient’s life,” said Cherise Giddens, Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer. “This team exemplified what it means to remain alert, act quickly, and work together seamlessly in the face of a medical emergency.”

The Safe Care Award is part of SGMC Health’s journey to become a High Reliability Organization (HRO), which reflects a health system-wide commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement. Honorees of this award demonstrate core HRO principles including situational awareness, early risk recognition, and a relentless focus on safe, reliable care.

Through their actions, this team exemplified SGMC Health’s mission to provide high-quality care to every patient, every time.

SGMC Health invites all team members, patients, and community members to recognize acts of excellence in patient safety. Safe Care Award nominations can be submitted at sgmc.org/recognition
