SGMC Encourages Blood Donations

Posted on: September 22nd, 2017

South Georgia Medical Center will be facilitating blood collections in south Georgia by hosting a blood drive with Life South Community Blood Centers on Friday, Oct. 4 from 8am-4:45pm. Life South is the sole provider of blood and blood products for SGMC and its affiliates.

There is no replacement for human blood except human blood. Donating blood just one time can save up to three lives. One unit of blood can be separated into several components: red blood cells, plasma, cryoprecipitate, and platelets which promote blood clotting. Blood transfusions are needed in trauma and surgical situations and also give those with leukemia and other cancers a chance to live. The drive will be held in Basement Level Classrooms A-C at the main campus located on 2501 North Patterson Street in Valdosta. Walk-ins are welcome.
