Vaginal Bleeding

Vaginal Bleeding or Lochia is the blood, mucus and tissue the uterus sheds after both vaginal and Cesarean births. This bleeding is similar to your menstrual period. It will gradually change color from bright red to yellow or white. Lochia may last up to four weeks following delivery.

Suggestions:

The amount of flow may change with you activity or body position.
Small clots are normal in the first few days
Change pads often to avoid bacterial growth
Do not use tampons or douche
Continue warm flushes of water until the bleeding stops
Your normal menstrual period will resume in six to 12 weeks, if you are not breastfeeding. It may be six months or longer, if you are breastfeeding.
