PET CT

PET CT is a combintation of Positron Emission Tomography (PET), or PET Scan and computed tomography(CT) to produce a special view correlated from both studies. Allowing physicians to review multiple views gives a more precise and accurate diagnosis.

A PET scan measures body functions such as blood flow, oxygen use, and sugar metabolism.  The body function measures allow physicians to determine how well organs and tissues are functioning. CT scans use special x-ray equipment to produce multiple images of the inside of the body. When performed together a PET CT scan can give a better view of disease or abnormalities than the two performed seperately.

PET CT scans are very valuable to oncologists as the scan will detect cancer, determine if cancer has spread in the body, assess the effectiveness of a cancer treatment plan and for patients in remission, PET CT can be used to check if cancer has returned. PET CT scans are used by a variety of other specialists to determine issues with the heart and brain.

Currently, SGMC has the area's only fixed PET CT Scanner and it is one of the world's most advanced scanners the new Discovery™ VCT 64-Slice PET CT scanner. Located in the new Imaging Center, our fixed PET CT unit is a great asset to our community.
