Special Care Nursery

Our special care nursery cares for babies who need medical monitoring or services not available in our regular nursery.  In the neonatal unit,  special care is given to babies that are born prematurely or those infants who have illnesses, abnormalities or other medical conditions that require a specialized level of care in addition to the routine care normal newborns receive.

SGMC's first neonatologists, Dr. Christopher Young is on staff to provide care and comfort to premature babies delivered at SGMC. His expertise along with our dedicated nursery staff, provide our mothers and babies with a wonderful resource close to home. Babies in the Special Care Nursery are cared for by  nurses specially trained and certified in Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Neonatal Resuscitation and Stable (stabilization of infants for transport to another facility). Also on the team are respiratory therapists, social workers, pharmacists and a lactation consultant.

  • Mothers are encouraged to breastfeed babies in the special care nursery. If your baby is unable to breastfeed, we will assist you with a pump and storage supplies.

  • Please remember to wash your hands and keep visitors away that may be sick or exposed to germs.

Visitation

  • Visitation by parents is highly encouraged. Please try to avoid visitation during shift changes.

  • Limit 2 visitors at a time. Visitors (up to four) may be designated by the parents for visitation.

  • Visitors must bring and present their photo ID.

How do I get updates on my baby when I am not there?
