Neurosciences
South Georgia Medical Center offers coordinated neurology and neurosurgical care for our patients. At SGMC, board certified neurosurgeons and board certified neurologists work together to treat disorders, injuries and diseases of the brain and spinal cord. From the diagnosis of headaches to the removal of cancerous tumors, the Neuroscience Service can diagnose and treat disorders and diseases that range from the simplest to the most complex.
SGMC's Department of Neurosurgery has offered specialized, comprehensive care for brain, spine and nerve disorders for over 35 years. SGMC provides patients and physicians with a special inpatient unit for brain and spinal cord patients on 4-West and maintains the area's only dedicated specially-equipped neurosurgery and spine operating suite.
Neurosurgeons stay informed on the latest surgical breakthroughs including minimally invasive procedures and motion preservation techniques. They treat spinal instability, tumors, degenerative conditions and cervical and lumbar fractures using specialized instruments and laser technology that is not found in other facilities. SGMC also offers the expertise of a Neurosurgery clinical resource nurse who provides case management and patient education in neuro/spine cases.

Our neurologists use a variety of medical images (PET/CT and MRI) and other specialized tests to study electrical activity in the brain (EEG) and electromyogram (EMG) to test muscle function. Depending on the symptoms, they may physically examine the nerves of the head and neck, or test the patient’s balance, reflexes, muscle strength, and range of movement. They may also test the patient’s memory, speech, and sense of feeling/reflexes and prescribe treatment.
