Colonoscopy

Colonoscopy is a commonly performed procedure that allows the gastroenterologist to see things such as inflamed tissue, abnormal growths and ulcers. Screening colonoscopy is used to look for early signs of cancer in the colon and rectum. It is also used to look for causes of unexplained changes in bowel habits and to evaluate symptoms like abdominal pain, rectal bleeding and weight loss. Most colorectal cancers and most deaths from colorectal cancer are preventable through screenings.

A colonoscopy will require moderate sedation and a short recovery period. You should expect to spend two to three hours in the endoscopy department.

If you are scheduled for a colonoscopy, you will need to get a prep and prep instructions from the performing physician’s office.

Please remember to drink plenty of fluid during your prep time at home.
