Prevention

While the medical community is constantly learning new ways to fight cancer, there are some proven methods to reduce the risk of developing the disease. Some people think that trying to prevent cancer is like driving down a dead-end street - there's no way out. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, up to two-thirds of all cancer cases could be prevented if people applied everything known today about cancer prevention to their lives.

By maintaining a healthier lifestyle and getting the recommended screenings for cancer detection you can reduce your risk for many cancers.

Another useful tool, available at SGMC, used for the prevention of breast cancer is digital mammorgraphybreast MRI and breast biopsy.  Digital Mammography allows radiologists to have better image visibility resulting in fewer call-backs and less anxiety for the patient. Breast MRI is available for patients with abnormal mammograms and high-risk for breast cancer. Breast MRI allows for a better chance of early detection of breast cancer.  Breast biopsy is available for women to undergo once an abnormal area has been detected to determine if there are cancerous cells.
