On Tuesday, February 9, members of the Stone Creek Ladies Golf Association presented a $4,000 check to SGMC Foundation President James Lee Herndon to benefit the new Cancer Rehab Program being offered at SGMC.
The proceeds came from the 11th Annual Best-Ball for Breast Cancer Golf Tournament held this past September at Stone Creek. In addition to a great day on the golf course, players and their guests were made aware of the growing prevalence of breast cancer in active women and the necessity of using any and all programs possible to help eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease.
The Cancer Rehab Program is one component of a new Cancer Survivorship Program that is currently being offered at SGMC. Former cancer patients who enroll in the program will be educated on how to stay well post treatment, reduce the risk of recurrence through proper diet and exercise, and learn how to maintain open communication with their primary care physician.
The generous donation from the Stone Creek Ladies Golf Association will provide scholarships for 33 breast cancer survivors to attend the 12-week Cancer Rehab exercise course.
Breast cancer is the leading cause of death for women ages 35-54, and the disease also accounts for more than 75% of all cancer deaths in women 55 years of age and older.
