Emergency Services

If you think you may be having a medical emergency, call 911.

The Emergency Department (ED) at South Georgia Medical Center is open 24-hours a day, 7-days a week and never refuses care to anyone with a medical need. The Emergency Entrance is located off of Cowart Street facing the back of Mathis Auditorium. Parking is available near the ED entrance. The 34-bed Emergency department and 9-bed Fast Track serve approximately 4,800 patients each month.
The ED is staffed with registered nurses, patient care technicians (PCT), and board certified emergency physicians. The Fast Track is staffed with registered nurses, PCT, mid-level providers and board certified emergency physicians. The ED physicians are not employed by the hospital and like our radiologists and anesthesiologists, they bill separately for their services.

Advanced technology, including automated supply management, computers on wheels, electronic medical records and a patient tracking system helps to streamline patient care. Heart attack patients will be pleased to know that the ED is equipped with a CAREPoint workstation and Rosetta-Lt Data translators so that EKGs can be sent from public and private ambulance services from throughout the region while the patient is en route to the hospital. This allows earlier notification of the on-call cardiologist and earlier activation of the Cath lab team.

During the construction of our new 5 story patient tower, a portion of Cowart Street will remain closed. Alternate routes are shown below for those accessing the Emergency Department.

Patients with non-emergency illnesses or injuries should not seek care in an Emergency Room.  Patients that need medical treatment for non-life threatening illnesses and injuries have several options available in our area. If it is during normal business hours, seek care at one of our affiliated physicians offices or you may visit Health Care South, an SGMC medical clinic for patients needing primary care services and walk-in care. For children up to age 18 SGMC provides Youth Care for after-hour treatment of minor illnesses and injuries.

Patient Satisfaction is Very Important

Patient satisfaction is a very important part of the care process at SGMC. We want you to feel you received very good care so that you feel confident coming to SGMC and recommending our services to others. We encourage you to share both positive and negative comments with any member of our team. If we have not met your expectations, please let your caregivers know before you leave. Randomly selected patients will receive a Press Ganey Patient Satisfaction survey in the mail. We encourage you to complete the survey and return it in the pre-paid envelope.
