Special Delivery Parenting Classes

Caring for a new baby, especially for first time mothers can be overwhelming. Not only is your body going through physical changes, you will also experience emotional changes. Preparation and education is key to having a successful happy pregnancy, delivery and postpartum period.

SGMC provides an array of classes to choose from for expectant moms, dads, siblings and caregivers. All classes are provided as a community service for the expectant parents in south Georgia and north Florida.  Each class is lead by a registered nurse.

Tender Loving Care and Infant CPR Class

This class is designed to give expectant parents such as umbilical cord care, circumcision care and safety factors for newborns. Information on various aspects of newborn care such as feeding, bathing and diapering will also be presented. How to perform cardiopulmonary resusitation (CPR), rescue breathing and airway obstruction will be taught for children under 1 year of age.

Childbirth, Postpartum and Epidural Class

This is a childbirth and postpartum class for couples preparing for vaginal or cesarean section deliveries. You will learn what to expect during delivery and how to car for yourself after delivery. This is a great way to help ease anxiety about your upcoming delivery. The epidural class will also be taught during this class. A tour of Labor & Delivery, Postpartum and the Nursery will be given. This class is targeted for both mothers and the support person. **The epidural class must be attended to receive an epidural during your labor.

Epidural Class

If you are considering having an epidural, you must attend an Epidural Educational class.  Expectant mothers should be in their fifth month when registering for the class. **The epidural class must be attended to receive an epidural during your labor - You may attend the solo epidural class or the combined Childbirth, Postpartum and Epidural Class.

Saturday Combo Class

This class offers expectant mothers the ability to attend multiple classes in one class day. It will combine the Childbirth Postpartum and Epidural Class and the Tender Loving Care all in one day. This class is from 8:00am - 1pm and is offered once a quarter in January, April, August and October. **You are welcome to bring a snack and somthing to drink to this class.

Breastfeeding Basics

This class is taught by a certified lactation consultant will discuss basics of anatomy and physiology of milk production, techniques of latch and positioning, maternal diet and the management of common problems. The class will also touch on the benefits of breastfeeding, breastfeeding and the working mother and strategies for continuing breastfeeding. Husbands and significant others are encouraged to attend.

Super Sibling Class 

A sibling class that helps prepares brothers and sisters for the arrival of a new baby. Please bring a favorite stuffed animal or baby doll to practice diapering and a camera to take pictures. A tour will be given so your child will be more comfortable when visiting later.
