March 2013

Berrien County Hospital will officially become part of the SGMC family on April 1, 2013.  A ribbon cutting and dedication of the facility will take place at 2 pm on April 1st on the Berrien Campus.

Work continues on the Power Plant, located between the parking deck and the Surgery Center.  The new generators are being tested. The plant is expected to be completed by the end of April. The plant will supply emergency power to the main facility including the new Dasher Memorial Heart Center and patient tower.

The renovations on the Women & Children’s unit are in the final phase.  We hope to complete the last group of renovations to patient rooms within the next two months.

Construction on the new power plant is ongoing.  We are approximately two months out from bringing the new power plant on-line.  When the power plant goes on-line, both primary power and our emergency power will be affected.  However, this should not be disruptive to the organization because we have two power feeds bringing electricity to our campus from Georgia Power.

We are less than five months from the completion of the new Patient Tower (middle of July 2013).  Meetings are presently taking place to prepare for the move into the new facility.  Once we have completely moved into the new Patient Tower, we will start the process of renovating the old vacated space.  The renovation of the old space will take several years to complete.

Renovations continue on Post-Partum.  We are completing seven rooms now, and have eight more rooms
left to renovate.

The mammography space at Smith Northview is being renovated to house a new digital mammography unit.  Equipment is expected to be installed sometime in March 2013.

The new Lakeland Villa Convalescent Center replacement nursing home project has begun and will take approximately a year to complete.

The Hospital Authority has approved the renovation of the elevators on the back side of the main elevators (elevators that are mainly used by hospital staff). The upgrade to the front, main lobby elevators is almost complete.
