Cancer Programs and Screenings
Community Health Promotions coordinate annual cancer screenings during the awareness month of the specified cancer. Below you will find the month and what screen is offered annually during that month. You can register online for certain screenings or by contacting the Community Health Promotion Coordinator at 229.333.1074.
At all of our screenings, the American Cancer Society provides free education material and visual aids.
JANUARY
Cervical Cancer Screening
Free pap smears are performed by nurse practitioners to test for cervical cancer. Registration is required.
FEBRUARY
Oral Cancer Screening
The Pearlman Cancer Center, local dentists, oral surgeons and otolaryngologists come together to offer free oral cancer screenings to promote oral cancer awareness. Registration is required.
MARCH
Colon Cancer Screening
Colon Cancer Screening kits are provided year round, free of charge. Please call 229.333.1074 to request your kit. It will come to you in the mail with detailed instructions.
MAY
Skin Cancer Screenings
A dermatologist performs free skin screenings at the Pearlman Cancer Center to look for possible problem areas. Registration is required. Online registration available.
SEPTEMBER
Prostate Cancer Screening
Free digital rectal exams and PSA (prostate-specific antigen) blood tests are offered to men by SGMC affiliated urologists. Men must meet criteria set by the American Cancer Society. Online registration available.
OCTOBER
Clinical Breast Screening
Free clinical breast screenings are offered in October by registered nurses and nurse practitioners. Participants are educated on proper breast self-exams. For women who meet qualifications for the Breast Test and More Program through the South Health District, a free mammogram will be scheduled. Registration is required.
NOVEMBER
Great American Smoke Out
This is an annual event held on the third Thursday of November encouraging Americans to stop smoking. SGMC’s Pulmonology Services teams up with the American Cancer Society and South Health District to offer free pulmonary function tests, blood pressure checks, educational information and a chance to win prizes. Registration is not required.
