Staff of South Georgia Medical Center and the SGMC Pearlman Cancer Center become Diamond Angel Sponsors for the 2012 Relay for Life of Lowndes County The American Cancer Society is proud to announce that the Pearlman Cancer Center of South Georgia Medical Center is a Diamond Angel Sponsor for the 2012 Relay for Life of Lowndes County. “Participation in Relay is eagerly anticipated each year by the hospital staff,” stated Tonya Coil, committee co-chair and Cancer Center staff member. “The patients at the Cancer Center are not just patients, they quickly become family. Relay gives us the opportunity to celebrate them, their lives, their families, and their strength and determination.”The SGMC relay team consists of more than sixty staff members, representing multiple departments of the hospital, and participants of the Best Buddies Support Group. The Pearlman Cancer Center and the American Cancer Society currently work together on multiple projects including the Reach to Recovery, and Look Good Feel Better. Reach to Recovery is a program that matches newly diagnosed patients with someone that is on the other side of treatment. It creates a supportive relationship between the patients.  The Look Good Feel Better program is a class that women undergoing chemotherapy can attend to get tools and techniques on masking the effects of their treatment. Each registered patient receives a kit of makeup to use during the class and to take home with them. The classes are led by licensed cosmetologists. The American Cancer Society focuses their efforts in 4 areas: ‘Stay Well, Get Well, Finding Cures and Fighting Back’.  ‘Stay Well’ outlines the importance of education and early detection. ‘Get Well’ defines ACS programs and services.  ‘Fighting Back’ represents advocacy efforts, and ‘Finding Cures’ outlines research efforts. The American Cancer Society has funded 46 scientists that have gone on to win the Nobel Peace Prize for their cancer research!
