SGMC Lanier Campus honored three employees in celebration of Nurse’s Week. SGMC asked nurses and nursing support staff to nominate one registered nurse, licensed practical nurse, and certified nursing assistant for a Nursing Excellence Award. The winners were Angela Sirmans, RN, Elena Ortiz, LPN, and Safiya Rickman, CNA, who all work in the Medical Surgical Unit.Sirmans has been with the Lanier Campus for four years. She is described as a dedicated employee, who sets a positive example in her role as a Patient Care Coordinator. Sirmans is well thought of by management staff and her peers. Co-workers say she is a go to person in all situations, helping everyone with any patient care issues. She has a great listening ear and a heart of gold, providing wonderful care to all patients.Ortiz has been with the Lanier Campus for a year and in this short time has shown her worth. She is described as a hard worker who is always willing to help. CNAs look forward to working with her, and she often comes in extra to help with shifts. She takes great care of her patients and this is validated by the positive things they say about her.Rickman has also been with Lanier for one year. She began her career with a “go get them” attitude, and that still shows today.  Her co-workers say it’s going to be a great shift when they see they are working with her.  Nurses express the same sentiment, saying they don’t worry about things getting done when she is here. She is always willing to come in and work extra and help out.Nursing, or Patient Care Services as it is commonly called, is a vitally important function in all healthcare organizations. SGMC employs 1,200 employees within the Nursing division and would not be successful without the many contributions of nurses and nursing support staff who deliver hands-on care.
