February is Heart Health Month and SGMC’s Dasher Heart Center is planning various activities to promote community awareness of heart disease. Every year about 785,000 Americans have a first heart attack; another 470,000 who have already had one or more heart attacks have another attack.

To kickoff the month SGMC employees are encouraged to ‘Wear Red’ on Friday, February 3 to raise awareness of women and heart disease. SGMC’s Heart Health Expo will be held on Sunday, February 12th from 2:00 – 5:00pm at Valdosta State University’s University Center. Free EKG’s, cholesterol screenings, blood pressure checks, pulmonary function tests, and body fat analyses will be offered. Classes on Compressions-Only CPR, information on nutrition, smoking cessation, and diabetes management will also be offered.

Cardiologist Sid Staton, MD and Neurologist Brian Dawson, MD will present on heart disease and stroke. Registration is required. Members of SGMC’s Dasher Heart Center will provide community education throughout the month. Presentations are scheduled with the Azalea City Woman’s Club on February 14, Valdosta State University faculty on February 21st , with the Azalea City Quota Club on February 21st, and to the SGMC Volunteer Auxiliary on February 22nd.

“Heart disease is a leading killer of both men and women and by educating people on the signs and symptoms of heart disease, we are saving lives,” said Trey Powell, MD, Chief of Cardiology Services at SGMC.
