SGMC Berrien Campus is starting a free support group for individuals who care for loved ones diagnosed with dementia. Clinical staff from the SGMC Dogwood Senior Health Center will host and facilitate the meetings. The first meeting will be held on August 30, 2016 (Tuesday) from 5:30pm – 6:30pm at the SGMC Berrien Campus Main Hospital Training Room, 1221 E. McPherson in Nashville.
According to Licensed Clinical Social Worker Brantley Wheeler, the support group will focus on providing a time where caregivers of dementia patients can come together for friendship and support. “It’s important for caregivers to link up with other families experiencing the same thing,” Wheeler explained. “Our purpose is to educate and provide therapies to help caregivers cope with their stressors.”
According to the website HelpGuide.org, nearly all Alzheimer’s or dementia caregivers will at some time experience sadness, anxiety, loneliness and exhaustion. Seeking help and support along the way is not a luxury for caregivers; it’s a necessity as the burden of caregiving can put you at increased risk for significant health problems. It is estimated that 30 to 40 percent of dementia caregivers will experience depression, high levels of stress or burnout.
The SGMC Dogwood Senior Health Center is offering this support group free of charge as a community benefit. Community members can call 229-433-8676 to sign up or receive additional information.
